PURPOSE: To persuade the students in my class that abortion IS murder therefore should be illegal.
THESIS: Abortion is murder. Murder is illegal; so why isn’t abortion?
Gianna Jessen's mother was seven-and-a-half months pregnant when she decided to abort the fetus she was carrying. A saline solution was injected into Gianna's mother's womb, which doctors thought would kill the fetus within hours. This time, most unusually, the procedure failed and Gianna was born alive, thanks in part to a shocked nurse. She was so taken aback by Gianna's live delivery that she summoned an ambulance to whisk her from the abortion clinic to the hospital. She weighed only two pounds at birth and needed to stay in hospital for nearly three months. In an ironic twist of fate the abortionist had to sign her birth certificate.
“The saline solution injected into the mother is to burn the baby, which gulps it in the womb, but after being literally burned alive for 18 hours I was delivered live. It says on my records that I was born after a saline abortion. I was not expected to be delivered live but fortunately for me the abortionist was not in the clinic when I arrived alive instead of dead. I was born about 6am and my 'birth' was not expected until about 9am, when he would be arriving for his office hours. There were many witnesses to my entry into this world. My biological mother and other young girls at the clinic, who also awaited the death of their babies, were the first to greet me and I am told this was a hysterical moment."
I. Abortion is inhumane
A. Abortion-the termination of a pregnancy by the removal or expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the uterus, resulting in or caused by its death.
B. Abortion procedures:
1. Medical abortions-use medication to end the pregnancy. This is accomplished usually by taking a pill. It is commonly known as the Abortion Pill -- RU486 It causes an early abortion. This method is FDA approved for use up to 49 days after conception or if a woman is 7 weeks pregnant and is 92% to 98% effective.
2. Dilation and Evacuation-Performed during the second trimester. First, the woman’s cervix must be dilated over 2-3 days prior to the abortion. When the mother comes back for the actual abortion, forceps are inserted through the cervix into the uterus. The abortion provider then uses the forceps to dismember the fetus by seizing a leg or arm and twisting it until it tears off and is then pulled out of the uterus. This is continued until only the head is remained when the skull is crushed and pulled out as well. The body parts must then be reassembled on a table to ensure that the entire of the baby has been extracted.
3. Intact Dilation and Extraction- performed after 21 weeks of pregnancy and is also referred to as Partial Birth Abortion. It takes about 2 to 3 days to fully expel the fetus and is usually performed for the safety of the mother. In this abortion, medication is given so that the cervix will dilate over about 2 days. The baby is then drawn out feet first and face down. [And likely flailing and very much alive] The doctor in charge of the abortion then takes a surgical scissors into the base of the skull and neck and spreads the blades apart. A catheter is the inserted into the skull and the brain is sucked out. When the skull is collapsed the rest of the body can pass through the cervix. This form of abortion is now illegal as of November 5, 2003 by President George W. Bush. In 2006, the law's constitutionality was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Gonzales v. Carhart.
4. Saline Injection Abortion-Usually done after the 16th week. A large needle is inserted through the mother’s abdominals and into uterus. A salt solution injected into the amniotic fluid will make the baby breath in and swallow the solution and dies within a couple of hours. Dehydration, hemorrhaging of the brain, and severely burned skin also contributes to the death of the baby. The mother goes into labor the next day and delivers a dead baby.
5. Manual Vacuum Aspiration-Most commonly used in the 7-15 weeks. The cervix is manually dilated and a machine-operated suction device is inserted into the uterus sucking out the fetus and placenta into a collection jar. The baby and placenta are torn apart in the process. After the vacuuming a spoon-shaped instrument called a curette may be used to remove any remaining tissue or body parts still in and lining the uterus. This procedure makes up about 89% of all abortions.
II. Abortion vs. Adoption
A. Adoption-your pregnancy ends with life; Abortion-your “choice” results in death.
B. While there are millions of people and couples in the world looking and willing to follow through to adopt, why should you willingly kill your baby and scar yourself in regret for the rest of your life? 1. 1.7 percent of children born to never-married women were placed for adoption in 1995, compared to 19.3 percent before 1973, before abortion was legalized.
III. Abortion Isn’t the Answer
A. Reasons for abortion:
• Social reasons (the child is unwanted, negatively life-changing)-93%
• Problems affecting the baby of their own health-6%
• Rape or incest-<1%
Only 7% of women getting abortions have a plausible reason to end their baby’s life. The other 93% could not only make their life and their baby’s life better, but by adoption, but make the life of someone looking to adopt.
B. By banning abortion, over 3,700 babies EVERY DAY would be saved. That’s over 1.37 MILLION every year. Everyone should have a chance to live. No one should be denied that right because of someone else’s selfish decision.
VI. The Arguments
A. What about rape? Should a woman be allowed to have an abortion is she is a victim of rape/incest?
1. When someone talks about rape, they refer to the fact that having the baby will be too much of a burden and remind the mother of something horrible that had happened to her. But let’s just say that the mother does go through with the pregnancy. What happens if she realizes when her child is five that all the child does is remind her of that dreadful event? Should she be allowed to kill the child? Of course not! 9 months of carrying the child is nothing compared to a life-time of regret knowing you ended a life. The child shouldn’t have to pay the price.
B. Without abortion, wouldn’t we get overpopulated?1. Today in the U.S. less babies are being born and people are living longer. Society is failing to replace itself with young people and will ultimately not survive. When there are not enough workers to make up for every retired person, our work base will be wiped out, especially in this time of economic crisis. So long as abortion wipes out more people, we will become a society that is older, a society where our retired far outnumbers our children and no one is left to pay for it all.
C. But even if abortion does become illegal, women will have them anyways.1. Well robbing banks is illegal, but people are going to do it anyways. A law against something doesn’t stop it from happening altogether but it does decrease the number by a lot. But people might also say that “if women can’t abort legally, they’re going too illegally and it’s going to be much more dangerous to them.” Well that may be the case. But that’s also like saying we should legalize robberies so it would make it safer for the burglars to get what they are trying to steal without getting shot by a police official or such. Doesn’t that sound unjust? Laws are made to protect the potential victim, not the potential assailant.
D. It’s the woman’s own body. She should be able to do whatever she wants with it. It should be her CHOICE.1. 99% of all U.S. abortions, the woman chooses to have sexual intercourse in the first place. It could be argued that the woman made her choice when she had sex. If you don’t want a baby, don’t engage in activities that will result in so.2. “I don't mind if you want to abort your own body but it sounds to me like you want to abort someone else’s” ~Dr. Hovind
CONCLUSION: 1/3 of our generation is being killed in some of the most inhumane ways a person can imagine. We might not be able to change the laws, but by informing others on what really goes on behind those clinic doors we can dramatically lower the death toll.
